How does it work?
First of all: Alexander Technique is something you have to experience. Just reading about it will not be enough to find the right ‘feeling’. This has to do with your habits and the fact that your brain experiences them (and how they feel) as normal. During an Alexander Technique lesson, the teacher helps you by showing with their hands and by explaining what you are doing (your habits) and what you can ‘undo’. The procedure is mainly one of thinking: you use mental orders which we call ‘directions’. You are in fact thinking more, and doing less. that makes the unnecessary activity stop and creates the possibility for you to experience what is actually happening. This way, everything can become more efficiently and better coordinated.

What do we do during a lesson?
During an Alexander lesson the main goal is to learn to leave yourself alone. Especially in the beginning, this is why we do only very simple things. Sitting down and standing up from a chair, for instance. Because you do those things all the time, your habit is very strong there. And because it is not a very difficult thing to do, it is an easy starting point to learn to observe yourself. Later, after a few lessons, we will also do other things, like bending down to pick up something from the floor or table, standing on toes, walking, sitting at the computer, playing a musical instrument, etcetera.

Also, every lesson there will be ‘the table’, in Alexander circles also called the lying down exercise. You lie down with your head on some books. Your feet are on the table and your knees are pointing up. The idea is to leave yourself alone as much as possible, while I help you to release your neck, head, back, arms, legs etcetera. I always call it the relaxing moment of the lesson and most students find it very pleasant.

Is there homework to be done?
The only thing you have to do at home is practise the lying down exercise for 15 minutes a day. This is essential, because during the lying down you practise your mental directions and at the same time you learn not to ‘do’ them. In my experience, students who practise lying down every day improve much faster than the ones that don’t. So it is really important to do this, otherwise it is a waste of time and money.

How many lessons do I need?
Most people describe the experience of an Alexander lesson as a feeling of lightness, ease, overview over their whole body, more space in the body etc. It is very personal how you experience the lessons, but most people like it from the first lesson. One thing that can be a bit tricky is that after the lesson, the effects disappear quite soon. That is because of the fact that your habits are stronger than the ‘new’ way of using yourself. Usually it takes a while before you are able to leave yourself alone to such an extent that the habit does not take over all the time anymore. This is the reason that most Alexander teachers advise to really invest some time to take weekly lessons. I usually advise to start with ten lessons to see if you want to continue. If you want to integrate the principles into your life, generally about 30 lessons are the minimum. If you have an injury, things can take more time as well.
It is also possible to take two lessons a week during the first months. That way you don’t lose too much of the effect between lessons. It makes the learning process go faster and it saves time in the end!

For whom is Alexander Technique?
Alexander Technique is really for everyone! I myself am a musician, but that doesn’t mean I only teach musicians. If you have RSI, if you want to become better coordinated during sports or dancing, if you have back pain, if you are pregnant or just had a baby, if you are recovering after an accident or illness: in all these situations Alexander Technique can help you along. It doesn’t matter if you are old or young, if you are in shape or not: everyone can learn something from this technique – and usually you can learn a lot!

How much does is cost?
Lessons with me cost 40 euros including VAT (BTW). For students the price is 30 euros. The lessons are 45 minutes.
NB: in January 2017 the prices will go up to 45 euros and 35 euros for students.
